Shopping for a Small Family? This Simple Trick Can Save You Money
If you are shopping for just yourself, a spouse or a small family of 2-3 people there is a simple trick that will help keep food bills a little lower and limit impulse spending at the grocery store or market.
These days many/ most super markets or stores offer both large and small cards. You may not realize it but the cart you choose can make a difference. It if is small you are less likely to fill it with impluse purchases and you will be more aware of what you are putting in as the cart fills up. Obviously if you are doing bulk or monthly shopping this may not be practical but if you are just running in to pick up a few things, grab a smaller cart, or a hand held plastic basket and you will be much less like to throw in those extra items that can create sticker shock at the cash register.
Do you know any other grocery store tricks to shave off some pennies? Share them in the thread below.

I used to follow a scheduled budget to shop for my family.. I would shop every weekend regularly and purchase what is needed for that week alone rather than shopping items for the entire month.. It makes me save loads of money, which i invest in some other work of mine... I would personally suggest to follow the same to save money..

Because we have a special diet, I started to keep track of what items cost at the various stores we shop. It gives me an idea of where to plan my shopping. I, also, started coming up with monthly menus instead of weekly so I can plan my big shopping trips accordingly instead of trying to grab what looks like a months worth of groceries to find we have nothing to make a meal out of at the end of the month.
I recall that television show from my youth. The contstents all had to rush through the store getting the highest ticket items into their cart as quickly as possible. I think that's how it went anyway. Apparently, research finds that using a list and getting what's on that list as quicly as possible saves money.
"You might think that browsing slowly through the store would help you pick out the best products. But our research shows that’s not the case.
The shoppers I studied who took the longest, examining packages, stopping at whatever caught their eye, invariably spent more money. They tumbled stray, often unhealthy, items into their baskets, and later, when questioned, couldn’t cite a reason for the purchases.
It turns out that making up a precise list beforehand and getting the errand done as quickly as possible is the best way to save money. Cutting time cuts costs, as well.
Bananas? Check. Special on Kozy Shack banana pudding? If it wasn’t indelibly marked on your grocery list, control your instincts and move on quickly."
Interesting. I can use all the suggestions here as well. This is an area I can certainly make some major improvements! Thanks :-)
I found that when I kept a running total of my grocery bill as I shop, I end up spending about 25% less than I otherwise would. Of course, I don't sit there trying to figure out the exact totals - I round up to account for tax. Seeing the total climbing is a good way to combat the temptation of impulse buys!
